As of today, marijuana is officially legal in Canada. Each province has addressed the legalization as they see fit and here’s what you need to know about the legalization of pot in Ontario:

It will be sold: online only to start with through the Ontario Cannabis Store, and come April 2019 it will become regulated by private retailers.

What will be sold: buds, dried flower, oils, capsules, pre-rolled joints and accessories.

Where to smoke: in private residences and other public places approved by municipal bylaws.

  • Residents can grow up to four plants per household.
  • Adults 19 years of age or older will be able to purchase cannabis and cannabis products.
  • Users will be able to possess up to 30 grams (or just over an ounce) of dried legal cannabis or the equivalent in non dried form.
  • Adults can share up to 30 grams of cannabis with other adults
  • No person may sell or distribute cannabis to a person under the age of 18. This could bring maximum penalties of up to 14 years in jail.
  • There is a zero tolerance policy for driving while impaired by cannabis. Police officers will be able to detect impaired driving by drugs using certain different road side tests, including testing saliva for THC.
  • Edibles will not be available for purchase for another year.
  • It is illegal to taking cannabis or cannabis products across the Canadian border.

 

The Government of Canada has committed close to $46 million dollars over the next five years for cannabis public education and awareness activities.
