For the second time in their career, the brother duo High Valley has scored a number one hit. It comes with today’s release of the weekly Billboard Canadian Country Airplay chart. The song, “Grew Up on That,” is also the title song of their latest EP, released this past May.

Earlier this year, I spoke with Curtis, the younger brother of High Valley, and he shared many thoughts about the song and noted, “It’s a good summary of growing up on our farm in northern Alberta.” For him, one line stands out and is close to him since it mentions two of the biggest influences on him and his brother, Brad. “I love the line ‘Ricky Skaggs on the vinyl, King James on the Bible,'” Curtis said. “That line alone summarizes our entire childhood so well.”

In addition to being a major influence on the boys, Ricky Skaggs has become a close friend to High Valley, introducing them onstage when they made their Grand Ole Opry debut a few years ago. The Country Music Hall of Fame member even volunteered to produce High Valley’s bluegrass version of one of their previous singles, “Single Man.” He even offered to take care of Curtis’ mandolin when it needed maintenance work.

Like much of their body of work, High Valley’s new #1 hit has some religious references. But those references, while they are “out there,” are not overly “preachy.” As Curtis explained, “We’re gonna sing about what we believe in and what our values are. We base our lifestyle completely around who Jesus was and he’s our ultimate role model.”

BTW, the High Valley single is the tenth Canadian song to top the Billboard chart, which includes American hits, so far this year. There’s a chance that even in this year of the Covid crisis, Canadian singles could tie or even surpass last year’s record-setting pace of twelve Canadian #1 hits in one year!
