“That was a mind-blowing interview!” That’s how Doug Supernaw described the phone interview we had just recorded. It was 1993 and he was at the height of his career with hits like “Reno” and the song that would be his only #1 hit, “I Don’t Call Him Daddy.” And Doug once did a great cover version of David Allan Coe’s “You Never Even Called Me By My Name.”\

In the years after Doug’s chart success (11 singles on the Billboard country chart in the early 1990’s), I had heard some really sad stories about him since his decline from the industry. I had hoped he would have the strength to overcome his demons. Then recently, I had heard about his health issues.

Doug Supernaw died today at the age of 60 after a battle with cancer. Almost a month ago, his wife had mentioned that he was being placed in hospice care. The cancer in his lungs, lymph nodes, bones and bladder had spread to his spine and brain.

Sincere condolences to his family, friends and fans. You can rest and be at peace now, Doug.
