Don’t like the looks of your house anymore? Maybe it looks tired and in major need of an upgrade. Well just because you’ve been watching those home reno shows on TV, doesn’t mean you should undertake upgrading your siding on your own. Oh sure, you like the looks of the cedar shakes a famous contractor uses on that cottage in the woods, but is it practical in your subdivision? Does it fit in?

If your house isn’t brick, but already has siding on it, do you know what type of siding it is?  You can install cedar shakes over brick if you wish, but if the current exterior is already siding, do you know what kind?  Vinyl siding is easily recognized; so is wood, and aluminum.  But if you have an older home, and you’re unsure about the material used, understand that it could be asbestos-cement siding before you attempt any work on your own.

Asbestos-cement siding was installed between the 1920’s to around 1970. The combination of cement and asbestos provided a strong, fire resistant exterior. This siding was easily painted over and often had vertical grooves or texture built into it to often look like wood. If the notion of having asbestos on your house scares you, do know that the siding is often considered very safe until it’s disturbed. This means, do not just jump in and try breaking it, sawing it, or taking a crowbar to it for removal on your own. Do not become that overzealous DIYer and let the dangerous asbestos fibres fly. Siding before and after

Continental Home Improvements will look at your home’s exterior and make the best recommendation. Homes with cement-asbestos siding require special care, and often a removal company, not a general contractor, will come in for removal. However, in many cases, the cement-asbestos siding may be left alone and covered over with a beautiful new alternative to suit your colour palette and achieve that designer look your want. Even if it happens to be cedar!
