Last Friday the 13th was very special for country artist Jelly Roll thanks to two members of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

While performing in Skynyrd’s hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, he brought out Rickey Medlocke and Johnny Van Zant for a version of Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” which he’s performed many times.

Jelly Roll said, “The greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the history of music came from Jacksonville, Florida. I don’t think they’re the greatest Southern rock band — I think they are the greatest rock band in the history of music. That’s what I believe as a man that grew up in the South.”

When it was done, Medlocke and Van Zant surprised Jelly with one of Gary Rossington‘s guitars, telling him that his family wanted him to have it. Van Zant said, “I wonder how many Lynyrd Skynyrd songs was written on that guitar right there.”

Jelly Roll was overcome with emotion and couldn’t speak, but you could see him mouth his appreciation.
