On Wednesday March 18th, OPP say a senior in Simcoe fell victim to a scam.

It was determined that a homeowner received a call from an individual identifying themselves a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. The unknown male claimed that the victims Social Insurance Number (SIN), had been stolen and he would try and help get it back. The suspect indicated that a $1,200 in gift cards would have to be purchased and insisted on keeping the victim on the phone.

The elderly resident attended a local business and purchased approximately $1,200 in gift cards at which time the identification numbers on the cards were provided.

The OPP is urging all residents to hang up the phone if they receive a call from someone claiming that they are a police officer and asking for any personal information or money. The police will NOT call and inquire about any financial information or ask for your Social Insurance Number.

Members of the Norfolk County OPP are continuing to investigate and are seeking the public’s assistance with this investigation. If anyone has any information they are being asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
