The Oxford County Library  is hosting a day of free virtual programming on Wednesday, January 27, in celebration of National Family Literacy Day. Join Library staff online to participate in a variety of virtual literacy-boosting activities with your family and discover the world from home. Videos will be shared every hour from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the Oxford County Library Facebook page and YouTube channel. See the video activity schedule below for more details:

 

10 a.m.    Books for Babies: Travel Edition

Join Holly and Sue to travel from home, to the city, and to space through song, tickles, and stories for babies. Learn ways to play with your baby to develop early literacy skills.

 

11 a.m.    Let’s Go There! With Miss Gail

                 Join Miss Gail for stories and songs about travel and transportation. For ages 2-6.

 

12 p.m.    Travel to STEAM Space and Make Conductive Galaxy Playdough

Join Holly to learn how to make conductive space playdough from simple ingredients to create a variety of STEAM projects. For ages 6-12

Materials Needed for Space Dough: Flour, Salt, Cream of Tartar, Vegetable Oil, Food Colouring (black, blue or purple), Glitter (silver, purple, and gold), Mixing Bowl, Measuring Spoons and Cups, Mixing Spoon, and Boiling Water.

 

1 p.m.      Tales on Safari

Africa is filled with beauty, history, animals and wonderful stories. Come on a safari with Dianne and Merley as we explore Africa together through songs and tales. For ages 6-10.

 

2 p.m.      Alphabet on the Go

Join Shannon for a walk through the alphabet (and through the community!) to use literacy strategies when you’re on the go! Fun for the whole family!

Materials Needed for Alphabet Plate Craft: Paper Plate, Marker, Scissors.

 

3 p.m.      Teen Book Trailer Challenge

Is there a book you really love that you want to share with the community? Join Sydnie to learn about our next teen challenge: Make a Book Trailer! For ages 12-18.

 

4 p.m.      Cooking with Kids

Join Leslie and Shannon for fun with food and simple recipes you can make together!

  • Microwave Mug Pizza
  • Sneaky Spinach Smoothies

 

5 p.m.      OCL Staff Readers’ Advisory Video;
Read Around the World with Oxford County Library!

The Oxford County Library staff will share their favourite titles for all ages that help us to discover the world from home! Place holds on any of these readers advisory suggestions in the library catalogue at www.ocl.net

 

Free wireless service is accessible outside of all OCL branches for individuals and families who want to take part in any of the virtual activities but do not have internet available at home.
