So, what do you do to celebrate a historic win at the Juno Awards? You go to work…if you’re The Washboard Union!
Just a couple of hours after the B.C.-based group won the Juno for Breakthrough Group of the Year, Chris, Aaron and David hit the stage at the Bull ‘n’ Barrel in downtown London, Ont. The award, open to groups in all styles of music, had never been won by a country group since the trophy was first presented in 2003…until now! And it’s only been in the last few years that a country group even made the final list of nominees: James Barker Band last year and Cold Creek County in 2017.
About 36 awards in various categories were presented Saturday night at the Gala Dinner…awards that aren’t presented on the televised show Sunday night on CBC-TV and across various of their media platforms. After winning an award at Saturday’s Gala, winners are escorted into the media room to take some questions from close to 100 representatives of various television, print, radio and social media. The Canadian country music industry can be proud of Washboard Union and their historic achievement.
While a couple of hours really isn’t enough time to soak in such a monumental win, the Warner Music Canada recording artists performed for a wall-to-wall crowd sharing the moment with fans who sang along to the Washboard hits, including their current hit, “She Gets Me.”
The guys acknowledged how London has become a special place in their hearts. It was the city where they won their first Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) award. Now, it’s the city where they won their first Juno!
Take a bow, guys. Go ahead and take a few bows. Your “shot of glory” ain’t nowhere near being over!
Look for country music to get a fair amount of airtime Sunday night. The sibling duo, The Reklaws, will perform on the show and the lone country category, Country Album of the Year, will be presented on the show. We’ll get to see some more Canadian country music history being made.
